Mt. Bachelor and the outdoors in Sunriver

Sunriver is surrounded by national forest. This page points to the agencies that keep current conditions.

Deschutes National Forest

The Forest Service describes Deschutes National Forest as nearly 1.6 million acres in Central Oregon that offer year-round recreation. Its main page posts fire danger levels, fire restrictions, alerts and area closures. Passes and permits are on its passes page and permits page. Newberry National Volcanic Monument is part of the forest, with the Lava Lands Visitor Center, Lava Butte and Lava River Cave, which uses timed reservations for parking.

Cascade Lakes area

The Forest Service's Cascade Lakes Area page describes the Cascade Lakes Welcome Station as a gateway to popular trails, lakes and recreation areas on the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway. Its Sparks Lake page places that lake about 25 miles west of Bend off the Cascade Lakes Highway and notes a 10 mph speed limit on the lake. The Forest Service also lists Sno-Parks for winter recreation.

Mt. Bachelor

Wikipedia describes Mt. Bachelor as a dormant stratovolcano atop a shield volcano in the Cascade Range in Deschutes County, inside Deschutes National Forest, reaching 9,068 feet. It notes that the ski area runs a chairlift to the summit in summer and in ski season, weather permitting. Season dates, hours and conditions are posted by the ski area itself at mtbachelor.com and change each year. Check road and weather conditions before you drive up, using the links on the visiting page.
